The Mandapalli Kshetra Mahtyam goes as follows:

Once there were two demons namely Ashwatha and Pippala. They both used to move in disguise, Ashvatha in the form of a ravi Tree and Pippala in the form of Brahmana. Both used to destroy the yagnas performed by the rishis and they used to eat the Brahmanas who comes to the forest. Then the Rishis asked  Lord Sani the son of Lord Surya to kill the Demons. Lord Sani who was doing penance accepted to kill them once he completed his penance. The Rishis told Sani that they will give away the power of their Penance to him and asked him to kill the demons immediately.  Sani accepted their request and killed Ashvatha and Pippala. As both the demons were the children of Sacred Brahmans Lord Sani got the effect of Brahmahatya   Dosam. So inorder to get rid of the Brahmahatya sin Lord Sani established Siva Linga in Mandapalli.
